Event Speakers
Dr. John Borchert
Dr. John W. Borchert is the Lead for Social Innovation at Innovate UNCG and an affiliated faculty member in Religious Studies. His work explores the intersection of religious practices and media technologies, focusing on embodiment and death. He co-chairs the Death, Dying, and Beyond Unit of the American Academy of Religion and serves on the board of gamevironments, a journal on religion and video gaming.
Dennis Toman JD
Dennis, a Wisconsin native, moved to North Carolina to attend UNC Law. He is a Certified Elder Law Attorney (CELA) and a Board Certified Specialist in Elder Law, Estate Planning, and Probate. Over 20 years ago, he founded The Elderlaw Firm to guide families through the complexities of elder care. As an author and frequent speaker, Dennis helps clients protect their assets and secure their future, while his firm continues to grow in offering comprehensive elder law services.
Stephanie Deaver
Stephanie Deaver is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 20 years of experience in mental health services. She specializes in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with a focus on mindfulness and a humanistic approach, working across inpatient and outpatient settings. In addition to her clinical work, Stephanie co-owns Hallmark Homecare, a referral agency connecting seniors with qualified caregivers. Her extensive work in senior care has deepened her understanding of the emotional and physical challenges faced by elderly clients, including aging, grief, and memory concerns.
Leslie Sanders
Leslie Sanders has been a Certified Laughter Leader for 20 years, offering workshops to various organizations such as Hospice and retirement communities. Her professional career focused on serving older adults in the Greensboro-High Point area, beginning at Home Instead Senior Care, where she advanced from Caregiver to Education Coordinator. After 14 years, she became Programs and Events Coordinator at Pennybyrn. In 2021, Leslie shifted her focus to family caregiving but continues to work part-time at Wellspring. She holds a BA in Psychology and a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Gerontology from UCLA.
Mary Manley
Mary Manley is the Director of Growth and Provider Relations at AuthoraCare Collective. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Speech-Communications and Political Science from NC State University. With over 20 years in the senior care industry, Mary is a passionate advocate for compassionate care and the rights of individuals to die with dignity. She also serves on the Board of Directors for Elon University’s Anatomical Gifts Program and is a member of the Diversity Advisory Council for the National Hospice & Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO).
Shelby Kline
Shelby Kline holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Management with a focus on Recreation Therapy. With 17 years of experience as a Recreation Therapist and Activities Director in senior care, she has seen the profound benefits of keeping seniors active and engaged. In 2021, she became Community Outreach Supervisor for HealthTeam Advantage, where she helps organize events and activities for seniors. Shelby also serves on the Board of Directors for the Triad Honor Flight and as the communications chair for the Triad Retirement Living Association.
